BUILD A PROCESS

Build a bacteriophage lytic cycle

Arrange a T4-style infection from recognition to release.

Build a process

Use the up and down buttons to build the sequence, then check your reasoning. Some biological events overlap; follow the simplified pathway described here.

  1. 1
    Lysis and release
  2. 2
    Assembly
  3. 3
    Component synthesis
  4. 4
    Genome entry
  5. 5
    Attachment
Read the complete pathway
  1. Attachment. Phage structures recognise receptors on a susceptible bacterium.
  2. Genome entry. Phage DNA enters; the capsid remains outside.
  3. Component synthesis. The infected cell produces viral genomes and proteins.
  4. Assembly. Genomes are packaged into new particles.
  5. Lysis and release. The cell wall is disrupted and progeny phages escape.
