BUILD A PROCESS

Follow a meal through the gut

Build the route and explain each region’s role.

Build a process

Use the up and down buttons to build the sequence, then check your reasoning. Some biological events overlap; follow the simplified pathway described here.

  1. 1
    Colon, rectum and anus
  2. 2
    Jejunum and ileum
  3. 3
    Duodenum
  4. 4
    Stomach
  5. 5
    Oesophagus
  6. 6
    Mouth
Read the complete pathway
  1. Mouth. Chewing and saliva begin processing; salivary amylase acts on starch.
  2. Oesophagus. Peristalsis propels the bolus.
  3. Stomach. Mixing, acid and pepsin support protein digestion.
  4. Duodenum. Bile and pancreatic secretions enter.
  5. Jejunum and ileum. Digestion continues and most nutrients are absorbed.
  6. Colon, rectum and anus. Water recovery, storage and elimination complete the route.
